Anthony Swofford clearly defines how people go "out of their norm" when they are in a warlike situation, especially for men. Men try and become overly masculine at times, and the sense of thought and morals disappear. On page 20 and 21 of Jarhead, Swofford describes in detail acts commited by overly masculine men. It's not pretty. "The exhileration isnt sexual, it's communal--a pure surge of passion and violence and shared anger, a pure distillation of our confusion and hope and shared fear." (21)
